Eggcellent

A few weeks ago, Corey and I were at our gym having coffee after our workout, and we accidentally did some eavesdropping.  We overheard one of the trainers explaining to a client why it is so detrimental to work out on an empty stomach in the morning.

As someone who almost always does this, I was intrigued.  Her reasoning made sense- basically, your body will use up important things that you need if it doesn’t have some sort of “fuel” to run off of before your work out.  She told her client that even eating one bite of something like oatmeal or yogurt is better than nothing.

Ever since overhearing that conversation, I’ve been making it a point to eat a little protein before my morning work outs.  Enter, the eggcellent hardboiled egg!

I just eat the eggwhite and throw the yolk away, and I’m ready to work out!

Workout

Yesterday morning started with yet another BodyPump class.  Afterwards, I got on the elliptical for 20 minutes.  I barely noticed I was sweating because I was so focused on what was happening in the Casey Anthony trial!  It will be sad when this local entertainment is over.

Breakfast

It was ridiculously hot yesterday.  Pretty much every day from here on out is going to be that way, because summer in Florida is no joke.  The perfect breakfast for a sweaty day will always be a nice, cold smoothie.

Into the blender went:

-1/2 cup almond milk

-1 scoop chocolate protein powder

-8 fresh strawberries

-1 banana

-1/4 cup Greek yogurt

-1/2 tablespoon peanut butter

-ice cubes

Sluuuuuuuuuuuuurp!

Lunch

I had some spare time on my hands in the afternoon, and decided to take advantage of not being in a rush at lunchtime, like I usually am.  I got to choppin’ and threw together a big salad.

I topped a bed of chopped Romaine lettuce with tomatoes, raw broccoli, hardboiled egg whites, red onion, and reduced-fat cheese.  I drizzled some Organicville Sesame Goddess dressing over top and dug in.

Dinner

When Corey got home from work, we decided to go to happy hour at Caddyshanks.  I enjoyed a Magic Hat #9 while we chatted about wedding plans, work, and house-hunting 🙂 .

Sometimes, the things that happen to us are just comical.  Two weekends ago (when my blog space was dunzo), Corey bought a Groupon to a really expensive restaurant called Funky Monkey (strange name choice for a nice restaurant, no?) Even with the Groupon, we couldn’t afford a glass of wine each if we wanted to eat dinner there, too!  The food we ordered was seriously delicious.  As soon as we handed the Groupon to the waitress, she told us they weren’t taking them that night.  Of course!

The comedy continued last night when we decided we would go there again to actually use our Groupon.  We called to make sure they were taking it and the waiter told us they were, but they were completely booked until after 10PM!  When we were there last week, there were only 2 other people in the whole place.  Oh, well!

After our dinner plans fell flat, it started pouring rain, so we decided to stay at Caddyshanks and order food.  We split a cheesy calzone filled with veggies.

This was HUGE, even after we split it.  I could not finish the whole thing, even if I wanted to!

I’ve got a lot of studying ahead of me this weekend…oh, joy!

All Dressed Up With No Place to Go…

It still amazes me that just a few months ago, the idea of waking up at 5AM for a workout seemed inconceivable.  Look at me now! 

Friday is my favorite day of the week to workout, for reasons I still haven’t figured out.  I guess I like to start the weekend off on the right foot!

Workout

I woke up at 5AM, put on my gym clothes and headed to a 6AM spin class.  The class was very intense, thanks to the fitness competitor/drill sergeant who taught the class.  I’ve taken her class before, but it’s been a while…she doesn’t mess around.  After getting sufficiently sweaty, I did something that made me feel VERY grown-up!

I did a lot of pre-planning last night, and made my breakfast and lunch ahead of time, as well as laying out my gym clothes, and packing a gym bag of my work outfit and toiletries to take to the gym.  The thought of showering and getting ready for work at the gym is something that has always seemed daunting, and the fact that Corey does it daily without hesitation has always amazed me.

Well, the moral of the story is I successfully got ready for work in the women’s locker room.  However, let me say this- I don’t care how old I am, I will never find it acceptable to walk around butt naked while holding conversations with other women.  I was approached to “chat” THREE different times by completely naked women! How is that normal?! My eyes are still bleeding.

Breakfast

I decided to attempt a breakfast that is pretty famous in the blogosphere- Overnight Oats!  To make them, you combine uncooked oats and milk in a container, and in the morning, the oats will be ready for eatin’ and toppin’ with your favorite fruits, yogurt, or whatever you’d like!

So…I’m not exactly sure where I went wrong, but this attempt goes into the “Fail” category (along with my kale chips).

I think there was a myriad of missteps that are to blame, including the fact that I added too much almond milk and let it sit in the car for an hour while I was in the gym.  I’m not giving up yet!  Overnight oats WILL happen for me!

After breakfast, I headed off to teach at the middle school.  Once again, they thought it would be fun to have me teach PE class.  I’m not sure which screams “I’d-be-perfect-to-teach-something-athletic” about me more- my Tory Burch flats or my Farrah Fawcett hair?

Lunch

I had a colorful and veg-tastic lunch after teaching, which consisted of leftover steamed broccoli and sweet potato fries, alongside a sliced pear.

After lunch, I had an important task to complete: Cleaning the apartment before my parents arrive for Easter!  I blasted the Britney Spears Pandora station, and got to work!

Once the place was spic ‘n’ span, I sat down and blogged away while sipping my favorite beer, Orange Blossom Pilsner:

Corey got home from work and we decided to go to Happy Hour at our new spot, CaddyShanks (don’t worry, Mitchell’s will make a return next weekend!).

I ordered a Magic Hat #9 while we watched…ESPN on 27 different TV’s.  <—-How did I get dooped into that?!

Oh, now I remember…I was bribed with THIS:

We shared a small mushroom and artichoke pizza, which was really good!  I love artichokes on anything and everything.

We came home to change clothes and get “going out” ready, because we had plans to meet a bunch of our friends down by UCF to watch the Magic game.  Somehow, in the 10 minutes it took me to get ready, all of our plans fell flat.

That’s when I sent out my best sad-face to the Twitterverse along with this Tweet:

Don’t you hate when you get completely ready, just to find out that you’re going NOWHERE?! Biggest pet peeve!

Oh, well.  There’s still plenty of fun plans to enjoy for the next two days- I LOVE EASTER!

Fun Friday

I really enjoy Fridays.  I assume I’m not the only one?

For some reason, I look forward to Friday-morning workouts the most during the week.  I think I’m extra-motivated because I know I’ll most likely be consuming empty alcohol calories during the weekend at some point.  Hey, whatever motivation works, right?

Workout

I woke up and went straight to the gym for an early morning spin class.  I don’t know what happened to my favorite instructor, but this lady, to put it nicely, sucked.  Ya know the teacher’s voice in Charlie Brown movies? “Wah wah wah wah wah wah”?  Well, she has stopped teaching cartoon children and now teaches spinning at my gym.  I tried to ignore her monotone, completely unmotivational instructions, but I couldn’t.  Reallllly put a damper on my spinning experience!

Breakfast

After my workout, I came home and made an interesting yogurt bowl.

I topped a cup of 0% Plain Chobani Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup Kashi 7-Grain Puffs Cereal, and a sprinkle of cinnamon and unsweetened cocoa powder.

If you can’t tell by now, we’re usually out of food by Friday, so I have to get creative.

Lunch

After spending a few hours at the pool and running some errands, I made a delicious salad.

I topped chopped Romaine and spinach with shaved carrot and leftover pork from my Pork Tacos.  I drizzled the last of the Green Sauce over top as dressing.

When Corey got home from work, we headed to CaddyShanks for some Happy Hour drinks.

I’ve never ordered champagne before, but I decided to have a glass after reading somewhere that it has less calories than wine or beer.  My parents have always said that I have champagne taste…on a beer budget. Good thing this champagne only cost $3…which I assume is how much they paid for the entire bottle.  That explains my headache this morning. Well, among other things, like a lot of wine.

After happy hour, we went to my friend Laura’s house.

Laura has a unique habit of chasing shots of tequila with food items.  Last night’s chaser-of-choice was vanilla icing.

I enjoyed several finger-fulls myself, minus the tequila.  I stuck to Chardonnay.

We met some of our friends at Knight Library.  Apparently, it seemed like a good idea to have a photoshoot with this guy:

At least I had the most awesome nails in the whole place!

How cool is that? They’re called Salon Effects by Sally Hansen, and they have a bunch of different prints.  I’m so trendy.
